Celeron 300A: The best CPU you could buy in 1998!
Was there a better CPU than the Celeron 300A? Back in 1998, the Celeron 300A was released on the same day as the Pentium II 450. The low-cost Celeron was supposed to cater to the entry- and mainstream market segments. Very quickly, end-users found out that you could overclock the Celeron 300A to 450 MHz - outperforming the flagship Pentium II 450 in certain cases! Let's travel back to 1998 and experience one of the best budget CPUs that have ever existed: The Celeron 300A

The sound of broken Hard Drives

Some time ago, I picked up a few hard drives from my local scrapyard. Unfortunately, the chances of picking up a working hard drive is less than 20%. Needless to say, I stopped looking for them. Only in rare cases, when a drive is still screwed to a drive cage, will I consider taking it. Before I will return the drives to the scrapyard, I want to share the sounds those drive make when we power ...

    My mother back in the 1999 or early 2000's took away my computer due to myself getting into trouble. So I bought with my hard earning money a PC Blaster from Tiger direct. It was a combo with Celeron 300. Or 350 I can't remember but most likely Celeron 300. What a fantastic computer. And back then Creatlive live chip was top of the line so it meant a lot for it being on board. And all the connection case have. Was great for a studio of some sort. I could never get the IR remote to work. Every few month I would search on ebay. Last year I saw two for sale I just didn't have the money. Stupid me. Ugh anyway's back to when I bought this. I paid under 200 dollars from tiger direct. I eventually remove board and upgraded to a Athlon board with cpu. And then one day I had a Nissan Pulsar that caught on fire due to oil leak and I left the case inside which I totally forgot I only had enough time to save my little dog. Wow I miss those Blaster PC I'll pay $500 for a mint.

    These were excellent CPUs! Best bang for the buck back in the day. Overclocking was great but there existed another equally awesome trick with these CPUs. They must have released these later in a regular socket format vs Slot1 because I remember buying Slot 1 adapter boards for the Mendocino chips that had jumper settings for various things , likely the OC voltage values but for my purposes the most important was the one to enable Symmetric Multi Processing (SMP. Back in those days there were no multi-core CPUs . We had to work hard or rather be smart to build systems with more than one CPU. I cannot remember the brand but at the time in the late 90s-early2000s I was deep into Linux and I found a company that sold motherboards with 2x Slot1 CPU slots. It wasn't ASUS or Gigabyte or another big name consumer company.. but I bought like 6-8 of those boards, the slot 1 CPU adapter boards and a buncha Mendocino Celeron 300s and built several dual-CPU systems for pennies on the dollar for what a dual-CPU system would otherwise cost. The downside is that you couldn't run Win98 and take advantage of it for gaming. You had to have a kernel that supported SMP so that meant Windows NT or Linux and you had to specifically configure the system to boot SMP. But it worked ,it was stable and it kicked ass!!!

    Nah. The Pentium 2 stole its lunch and kicked sand in its face. And it didn't matter how far you overclocked a Celeron - it was still sluggish due to the tiny cache. They would overclock like crazy - no doubt about it. But they did not overclock anything like the original AMD Athlon, where the Pencil Trick would unlock the processor multiplier, and my 1.0 Athlon ran at a rock solid 1.5Ghz, all day every day. For years. The box did sound like a jet aircraft however. :P

    • @bitsundbolts
      @bitsundbolts 2 дня назад

      That was a popular perception of the Celeron - unjustified in my opinion after testing it. The Celeron will be at least as fast as a Pentium II 400 and can compete with the 450 MHz model in some areas. If you were looking for a budget CPU and a shot at flagship performance, you could go wrong with a Celeron 300A. I had an Athlon 700 don't time in the year 2000. I never attempted to overclock it 😞

    My understanding was that it was the die from the 450mhz Xeon that came with both the on die cache and an L3 cache.

    • @bitsundbolts
      @bitsundbolts 2 дня назад

      Hm, I didn't think of the Xeon. But Pentium II based Xeons still had the level 2 cache on the cartridge on a separate chip. That is the reason the cartridge is a lot taller than that of a Pentium II. Instead of regular cache chips, Intel manufactured those cache chips themselves and could hit higher clock speeds. The cache operated at the CPU frequency IIRC.

    • @michaelallen1432
      @michaelallen1432 2 дня назад

      @@bitsundbolts looking at the info now available (which wasn't readily available back then) it seems that what we thought was not the case. I bet there is a grain of truth in that the core could handle the cache but it was not the case that they simply took that core and slapped it on a PCB as, you point out, the Xeon did not have on die cache, although it was full speed. It had to have been a derivative with the cache on die.

    I must have won the silicon lottery with mine. Not only was it rock-solid at 450 MHz, but I could get into Windows at 540 MHz on stock voltage. It wasn't fully stable at that speed, but it ran. Dialing it back to 504 MHz was pretty much the sweet spot.

      Nice! I think I want to try 504 on my good sample too! I haven't tried 112 MHz FSB yet.

    The 300A was reliably overclockable by 50% to 450MHz in almost all cases. All you had to do was change the front side bus speed on the motherboard from 66MHZ to 100MHz. A 300A running at 450MHz would keep up with a regular PII running at 400MHz, and it was half the cost. Yours is the first 300A I've heard of that wouldn't do that; possibly, it's because the motherboard (and its caps) are 26 years old, and are maybe a tad less stable than they used to be. I owned a 300A myself, and set up a number of machines for others back then to work the same way. They all ran at 450.

      It could be that the caps on my P2B are not ideal anymore, but the second Celeron works without issues at 450 MHz. I think it's just luck and this other Celeron just doesn't work at 450 MHz without adjusting the voltage. There were a handful of people confirming that their Celeron 300A wasn't able to overclock either.

    I had a k6-2 500mhz, but I had a friend with a celeron that didn't have cache, that cpu just felt awful, everything about it was slow and terrible. The desktop performance was so slow, booting worse. I don't even know what games he managed to play on it. I later upgraded to an athlon and I think he got duron for his system shortly after.

      Ohh, the cache-less Celeron was not good for playing games. Your friend must have suffered!

    It was my 2nd PC. Had bought it in November 1998 and have been using until summer 2003 ! :) Really great CPU!!!! I played Quake3, Blood2, Half Life, Age of Empires 2.
